The Pharisees and Herodians, unlikely allies, approach Jesus with false flattery, hoping to trap Him with a political question about paying taxes to Caesar. Yet Jesus, who can draw good even from human malice, turns their hostility into a profound revelation about our deepest identity.
God created humanity in His image and likeness. This is the language of intimate relationship. To bear God's image means that we are marked as His own, created with the capacity to know Him, love Him, and reflect His goodness in the world. We are made for holiness. And like a mirror, we are most fully ourselves when we reflect God's light to others.
Think of Moses descending the mountain after speaking with the Lord. His face radiated a brightness that others could not ignore. God's presence had left its mark upon him, enabling him to bring God's word to the people. God's light is never given merely for our own sake; it is meant to shine through us, so that others, too, may come to know and enjoy His love.
Bearing God's image reminds us not only where we come from but also where we are ultimately going. Yet while living in a world governed by earthly concerns, we can easily forget who we are. We become absorbed in what we own, achieve, and control. While we may owe earthly authorities a fraction of what we possess, we owe God our very selves. No part of our lives is meant to be off-limits to Him. He wants to be part of everything: our work, our families, our relationships, our hobbies, our possessions, our status, our sufferings, and our joys. A life wholly surrendered to God becomes a witness to His presence.
PONDER IN GOD’S PRESENCE:
Have I truly entrusted every part of my life to God?
When others encounter me, do they catch a glimpse of His love shining through me?
